Shrove Tuesday will soon be upon us and St Martin’s church Exminster in collaboration with Exminster Methodist Church will be celebrating with savoury and sweet pancakes. These will be served in the Methodist Hall and between 12 and 2pm on the 21st February, and you are most welcome to join us.

The word ‘shrove’ is the past tense of the verb ‘to shrive’, an old English word meaning to obtain absolution for ones sins through confession and doing ‘penance’. During the week before Lent (Shrovetide) Christians were expected to go to confession in preparation for the Lent season.

The custom of eating foods made with eggs, sugar and fat comes from the tradition that these were generally not eaten during the fasting period and as such were used up. Pancake Day (or Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras) is a great day of feasting so please feel free to join us for this meal.

Lent will soon be here and as always St Martins Church will be holding their Lent Lunches.

Lent is the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter. It is so named from the marking of ones forehead with ash from the previous years burnt palm leaves, a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The festival leads the Christian through to Good Friday and then Easter Sunday, reflecting on our Christian journey and relationship with Jesus.

Lunches will be served in St Martins Church following a brief Lent service of reflection, starting at 12pm.

The dates for the lunches are Thursdays 1st, 8th, 15th 22nd and 29th March, and will consist of a simple meal of soup , bread and cheese.

All donations will be given to the Sierra Leone Malaria Control Project and Water Aid.
